ResearchDr. Chen has extensive collaborative research experience in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials, laboratory investigations and epidemiological research. In addition to serving as a statistician for the General Clinical Research Center at University of Maryland and VA Maryland Health Care Center, he is co-investigator on many NIH funded grants such as “Prevention of Neonatal Infection in the Indian Community Setting Using Probiotics”, “Pharmacogenomics of Thiazolidinediome Response” and “Age and Sex Effects on Nerve Agent Damage to the Brain and Antidotal Therapies”. One of Dr. Chen’s major research interests is application of statistical methods in molecular biology. By using molecular technology, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and microarray technology, he currently works with many translational researchers on NIH-funded projects to study molecular mechanisms of hormone-independent growth and metastasisof prostate cancer, gene expression signatures of early cardiac remodeling, and biological basis for the racial disparity in HCV treatment outcomes. In addition to biomedical collaborations, Dr. Chen has been developing statistical methodologies relating to the optimal design and analysis of experiments, generalized mixed linear models, and the application of statistical methods in molecular biology. By blending coding theory and finite geometry techniques, he initiates complementary design theory to identify optimal fractional factorial designs. Such designs are widely used in many scientific investigations. Meanwhile he also has studied experimental design for comparative bioavailability studies and its application in pharmacokinetics drug-drug interaction studies, estimation of random effects in generalized linear mixed models and its application in small area estimation for survey data. The design and analysis of microarray experiments is another research focus of his. Dr. Chen is a regular reviewer for the NSF statistics program, Annals of Statistics, Biometrics, Biometrika, Journal of the American Statistical Association, and Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B.
