Epidemiology of Aging:  Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

The Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine has a National Research Service Award (NRSA) Training Grant in the Epidemiology of Aging. The aging of the U.S. population has resulted in an increased need for research on diseases and disabilities that affect older persons. The objective of this training program is to provide predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows with the education and skills to conduct original, independent research on the prevention of late life disability and functional decline. Primary emphasis is on the four main areas of faculty expertise and interdisciplinary research of musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular diseases, women’s health, and long-term care.

The Research Fellowship training will enable trainees to master a core curriculum in epidemiology and biostatistics, become knowledgeable about the basic biological and psychosocial processes of aging which are fundamental to gerontology, become an expert in at least one substantive area relevant to the prevention of disability and functional decline in the elderly, contribute to a research team under the supervision of mentors, demonstrate capacity to conduct independent research, and prepare for a career in which the trainee will make a major contribution to maintaining the health and lifestyle of an aging population.

In addition to the many interdepartmental relationships within the School of Medicine setting, our location in the Baltimore-Washington area maximizes opportunities for collaboration with government agencies, health care institutions and life science industries.

The University of Maryland Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine is a national leader in funded research. The multi-disciplinary faculty of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, physicians, social scientists, and computer scientists serves as a valuable resource for trainees.
